Korean Marigold Cassia Seed Tea | Jue Ming Zi | 50 Tea Bags
Korean marigold cassia seed tea is a caffeine-free Korean herbal tea of roasted cassia seeds (99%) and marigold petals (1%), blended into paper tea bags by Ssanggye in Hadong, Korea.
What is marigold cassia seed tea?
Cassia seed tea — gyeolmyeongja-cha (결명자차) in Korean, Jue Ming Zi in East Asian herbal tradition — is one of Korea's everyday roasted teas. The seeds are roasted until deep brown, so the brew tastes nutty and toasty, close to barley tea, with no caffeine at all.
This Ssanggye blend adds a small measure of marigold petals to the roasted seeds. The cup stays golden and nutty, and the marigold leaves a light floral finish.
Ssanggye (쌍계명차) has been making tea in Hadong at the foot of Jirisan since 1975 — a region better known in Korea for its tea fields than for factories. The same tea-making habits carry over into their everyday herbal blends.

How to enjoy it
How do you brew marigold cassia seed tea?
Drop one tea bag into about 5–7 fl oz (150–200 mL) of hot water (194°F / 90°C) and let it steep for 2 minutes. The maker suggests leaving the bag in while you drink rather than pulling it out early; use two bags for a stronger, darker cup.
Can you drink it iced?
Yes. Steep a bag in hot water for 2 minutes, then pour it over a glass of ice. Since there is no caffeine, it works equally well as a desk tea through the afternoon or a warm cup in the evening.
Good to know before you brew
Marigold belongs to the Asteraceae (daisy) family. If you are allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemum, or similar flowers, check with your doctor before drinking. The label also notes possible cross-contact with buckwheat, peach, milk, and soy — if you have a related food allergy, check the printed package label before drinking.
In Korean tradition cassia seed is considered a "cooling" tea — if you notice loose stools, brew it lighter or drink less. If you are pregnant, nursing, or taking medication, ask your healthcare provider first.
Marigold cassia seed tea vs plain gyeolmyeongja-cha — what's the difference?
Plain gyeolmyeongja-cha is brewed from 100% roasted cassia seeds and tastes dark, nutty, and roasty — many Koreans drink it the way others drink a caffeine-free coffee substitute. This blend differs in that 1% marigold petals are added, giving the same nutty base a lighter floral aroma and a brighter golden color.
Tea bags or loose seeds — which should you choose?
Tea bags are pre-portioned at 1.2 g and ready in 2 minutes — the easy choice for the office or after dinner. Loose raw seeds, like our Korean raw cassia seed (결명자), take a dry roast and a longer simmer but let you control the roast level and strength yourself.
