Korean Mountain Bellflower Root, known as "San-doraji" (산도라지), is a premium variety of the Balloon Flower root. Unlike common farm-raised roots, mountain-grown doraji survives in harsher wild environments, resulting in a denser texture and a significantly higher concentration of beneficial nutrients, particularly Saponins. It has been a staple in Korean households for centuries to maintain clear breathing and soothe the throat during changing seasons.
The bitterness of Doraji is the taste of health. This distinct flavor comes from Saponins and Platycodin, the active compounds responsible for its cleansing properties.
1. Doraji Tea (Throat Calming Tea):
The most popular way to consume it. Since the root is bitter, it pairs perfectly with sweet ingredients.
Tip: Brew with Korean Pear or Jujube (Red Dates) to balance the bitterness and enhance the soothing effect.
2. Honey Marinated (Doraji-Cheong):
Soak the dried roots in honey for several weeks. The honey extracts the beneficial compounds, creating a sweet syrup that is easy to eat daily.
3. Korean Side Dish (Namul):
Rehydrate the roots and sauté with sesame oil and garlic for a healthy, fibrous side dish.
Worked really nicely in my jujube tea. Would recommend.
